My reasons for brewing are many. However, I am asked this question
frequently and have summarized what I consider to be the 4 main reasons I
continue brewing year after year. If you are a brewer yourself, I'm sure you
can relate to all of the following:
 |
Brewing satisfies one of my needs to create. I consider
brewing an art form and try to think through my recipes with extreme care and
consideration. Some of my favorite creations include my Victory IPA, Biscuit
Pale Ale, Company #1 Red Ale, American White and Working Man's Porter. Each of
these was thought out carefully for a specific quality I was looking for in the
specific beer. I brew only all grain now, although I too started with extract
as the majority of brewers do. I grind my own grains, use only pure liquid
brewing yeast and try to find organically grown hops whenever possible. |
 |
Brewing satisfies another need of mine, that being an endless
passion for low-tech gadgetry. Nothing puts a smile on my face like installing
a new triple clamp or butterfly fitting. I love Stainless Steel, Copper and
Brass and work with these materials exclusively in my home brewery. |
 |
Brewing also satisfies my need for structure. A good brewing
day is 8-10 hours long and precisely timed throughout the process. Any slip
(water 5 degrees to hot, hops not boiled for the proper amount, stuck
runoffs) in the process and/or timing can be decremental to the final
product. Yes I do indeed have a clipboard with a complete list of daily brewing
tasks in the appropriate order, and a notepad for jotting down anything I may
want for future analysis and/or reference. |
 |
Brewing instills in me the feeling of 'old world tradition and
craftsmanship' that is sorely missing in our modern day environment. I love
that feeling! |
