Scaling a Grain Bill To Efficiency
| When recipes are circulated among brewers, the efficiency rating used to
create the recipe is carried with the recipe, so that the proper predicted
gravity is recorded. But what if your system has a different efficiency rating?
You need to adjust the efficiency with that of your system and modify the grain
bill so that the predicted gravity again reaches the original, desired gravity.
ProMash makes this easy for you! Consider the example below in which a brewer receives a recipe with the Efficiency setting at 75%. However, his system only achieves 60% and he must change that: |
| Step 1: Load the recipe you intend to scale. Note the original gravity and grain amounts. |
| Step 2: Click on the "Lock" check box, next to
the Efficiency rating, so that a checkmark appears (on). |
| Step 3: Decrease (or increase) to your actual efficiency rating. In this case we reduce the efficiency rating to 60%. Note the gravity remains the same while the grain amounts have increased due to the lower efficiency (more grain is needed to achieve the same SG with a less efficient system). |
| Step 4: Click on the "Lock" again when
finished, so that a checkmark disappears (off). |
| Step 5: You can now either save the recipe with the new settings, or better yet, use the "Save As" function to save the newly scaled recipe, thus keeping a copy of the original: |
