Scaling a Recipe Up/Down

One of the more frequent questions we are asked is how to scale a recipe up or down in ProMash.

The following example show's just how easy that is. In this example, your friend sends you a recipe calling for 6 Gallons. However, you want to double that (because you have a bigger system) and brew 12 gallons.

Step 1: Load the recipe you intend to scale:

Step 2: Click on the "Lock Ingredients to Batch Size",
so that a checkmark appears (on).

Step 3: Increase (or decrease) the batch size to the amount you intent to brew. Notice the ingredients all scale up/down accordingly:

Step 4: Click on the "Lock Ingredients to Batch Size",
so that a checkmark disappears (off).

Step 5: You can now either save the recipe with the new settings, or better yet, use the "Save As" function to save the newly scaled recipe, thus keeping a copy of the original:

Finally, take note that scaling recipes up or down by large amounts (IE taking a 17 bbl recipe down to 10 gallons), the hops will scale linearly. However, very large kettles obtain a much higher utilization rate than very small kettles. Because of this, you may need to do some final tweaking to the hop bill.

Also be aware of the "Kettle Size Utilization Number" within your system settings, and be aware that other brewers with different systems may have this set differently. The setting for the Kettle Size Utilization is set within the System Defaults, Hop Section.
