Components of the Sikes Hydrometer

Slide Rule

Deluxe Sikes Hydrometers were manufactured with a temperature correcting Slide rule. A few actually came with 2 rules. These rules are called the Comparative and Reducing rules.

The Slide Rule(s) were made from either 'boxwood' or, for a premium, Ivory. The boxwood rules have a tendency to swell and become sticky, while the Ivory rules eliminate this problem. Below are examples of both a 'boxwood' rule, and 2 Ivory rules.

The Boxwood Rule:

This slide rule has 2 distinct reading types on either side of the rule. The center strip is the actual slide, and it's measure is the British Proof. When the wood is swollen the slide can become quite sticky.

The Ivory Rules:

These two Ivory slide rules (comparative and reducing) have 2 distinct reading types on either side of the rule. The center strips are the actual slides, and their measure is the British Proof.
