As there was really only one type of float
(as opposed to several calibrated for different specific gravities as there
are today), the float was weighted down with various weights to take
gravity readings of various worts. The standard weight set is the top
calibration cap, and nine numbered weights labelled 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70,
80, 90.
The calibration cap is exactly 1/12'th the total weight of the hydrometer
float, and is used to calibrate the hydrometer in distilled water at 51 degrees
F. It is very important to have the calibration cap with the Sikes kit, for
without it the hydrometer can never be calibrated. |
Note also that along with the weight stamp, each weight is
stamped with the serial number of the hydrometer. This was also to insure that
the hydrometer being used was used with the weights it was calibrated for, and
can also be used to determine that a Sikes hydrometer is complete and original
by verifying the serial number stamp on each weight. You can see this by
