BOTTOM OF CASE:

The bottom bears two stamps, probably applied during calibration. The first is simply 1 line bearing a date 10 JUN 1906, the second is a company seal which is from Thos. O Blake, 58 Hatton Garden). The later is most likely a calibration stamp.

The Weights

9 weights, with the top cap missing. Not also that 2 of the weights have been filed, and it is impossible to determine if these are indeed the original weights as there is no serial number to verify them as such. They may have been filed when the unit was last calibrated.

The Float

The shaft is marked with 10 main increments ranging from 0 to 10, with 4 side markers between each main marker, for a 0.2 accuracy between marks. Every mark is readable.

The bottom shaft contains the Hydrometer's serial number stamp of 10176.

The Thermometer

The thermometer measures degrees Fahrenheit from 25 degrees to 105 degrees. This is a mercury thermometer, with an ivory back and very solid protection attachments.

This thermometer is in working condition and at the time the scan was taken, if you look close enough at the detail picture you can see it is reading 75 1/2 degrees.

The Documentation

The documentation included with this Sikes is simply exquisite. Hard bound and dated 1855. The book contains the complete Sikes Hydrometer Act, a Usage manual from Dring & Fage and complete Strength Tables for temperatures ranging from 30 degrees F to 80 Degrees F.

I have carefully scanned each page of this manual, then closed it up and sealed it away. Many of the scans are presented throughout this site, and I invite you to read them all. Below are a few sample pages which include some of the nice artwork.
